"Under the Red Umbrella: Untold Sex Worker Stories" is an online exhibition that hopes to give sex workers a voice to share their struggles and challenges. This is a student led initiative by "Beyond Red", in collaboration with Project X, with its objectives centering on the reduction of societal stigmatization towards sex workers and creating awareness of the organization that works with them.

Through art pieces and photographs, it is hoped that the general public will gain a better understanding of how this marginalized population views society and themselves in addition to their living and working environments. We believe that with greater empathy and inclusion, Singapore will be a better place for everyone to reside in.

ABOUT US

Beyond Red is formed by a group of 7 like-minded students with the aims of reducing the stigma sex workers in Singapore face, with the awareness that the society is not receptive of the line of work they are in. In line with the objective, the group has created a resource booklet targeted at aiding staff working with sex workers, a video and this online exhibition.

Project X is a community based organization with 5 part-time sex workers involved in the planning and execution of our programs. We believe that sex work is work and that sex workers should not be criminalized alongside murderers and thieves. We wish to challenge the stigma and discrimination that results in physical, verbal, emotional, and financial violence. While there are multiple reasons for entering into sex work, the bottom-line is that we are all trying to earn a living in this constantly-inflating economy.
